Substitution
The same laptop tethered to a phone, or a mobile dongle. Same browser, same addresses, same account.
What moves
Who can observe that a Tor connection happened, and under whose subscriber record. A home line ties the connection to a fixed address and a billing name; a mobile connection ties it to a SIM and a set of cell sites.
Does not move
Everything after the first hop. The relays, the address you open, the genuineness of that address, your account, your funding history and every habit inside the market.
Cost
Data allowance, usually a slower and less stable connection, and more circuit failures on a congested cell.
Verdict
Only if the fact that a Tor connection happened from your home line is itself the thing you are trying to avoid. Otherwise this is motion without direction.

IWhat the first hop can and cannot see

Whoever carries your traffic to the first relay can tell that you are using Tor. They cannot see which onion service you visit, what is on the page, or anything you type. That has been true since the guard relay was introduced and it does not change with the carrier.

So the substitution moves a single fact from one ledger to another: from a fixed line with a name and an address on it, to a SIM with whatever is attached to that SIM. If the SIM is registered to you, in a country where registration is required, you have moved the fact sideways rather than removed it. That is worth being honest about before you spend an evening on it.

Mobile connections have more packet loss and more jitter than a fixed line, and Tor is more sensitive to both than an ordinary website is. In practice you will see more stalled Awazon pages and more circuits that need rebuilding, which pushes you back to record N1 more often than usual.

There is also a subtler cost. People who make this change tend to make it once and then treat the session as generally safer, which leaks into the decisions that follow. Nothing about the carrier makes a clone address less convincing or an outgoing transfer reversible.

IVThe version of this that does nothing

Switching from your own broadband to your own mobile line, in the same room, with the same SIM in your own name, and calling it a precaution. Both connections are yours, both are recorded, and the only thing that changed is which of your two subscriptions carries the entry in the log. If the honest answer to the question of who you are moving this away from is nobody, this record is not the one you needed.
