IWhy a stalled address is usually a path

An onion connection is not a line from you to a server. Your client picks a set of relays, the service picks its own, and the two sides meet at a rendezvous point neither of them chose in advance. Six machines have to cooperate for a page to load, and any one of them can be overloaded, restarting, or simply slow that minute.

The result is that failure is normal and specific. It is a failure of this particular arrangement, not of the address. Throw the arrangement away and the next one is built from a different set of machines. In practice this is why an Awazon address that timed out three times in a row opens instantly on the fourth attempt, with nothing else changed.

IIHow to do it in Tor Browser

1. 01Open the menu at the top right, or click the padlock in the address bar depending on your release.
2. 02Choose New Tor Circuit for this Site. The tab reloads on a fresh path.
3. 03If the item is not visible, closing the tab and pasting the address into a new one has the same effect after a short delay.
4. 04Give it two or three attempts before you decide the address is the problem. One retry is not a test.

IIIWhat people do instead

The common sequence after a stall is: try the address twice, decide the market is down, and go looking for a working awazon market link somewhere else. That search happens under mild pressure, which is exactly the state in which people accept a string from a stranger. The cost of a rebuilt circuit is four seconds. The cost of a link accepted in a hurry is described in record A6, and it is not four seconds.

The second common response is to change network entirely, moving to mobile data or a different wifi. That is a much larger change with its own consequences, and it is the wrong tool if the problem was three relays. Try the free thing first.

IVWhat it cannot fix

If every one of the three addresses fails the same way on several fresh circuits, and an unrelated onion you know works also fails, the fault is not in the paths. It is between you and the Tor network, which puts you in record N4 if your connection is filtered, or in record T2 if it is not.

Rebuilding also does nothing about a wrong address. A clone loads perfectly on a fresh circuit, because there is nothing wrong with the path to it.
