Baseline
Tor Browser connecting directly to the network, no bridge configured.
Substitution
A bridge added in the connection settings, usually obfs4 or Snowflake, requested from the built in helper or from the official request address.
What moves
The first hop is no longer a published relay. Traffic goes to an unlisted machine and, with obfs4, is disguised so that it does not look like Tor to equipment watching the line.
Does not move
Everything past the first hop. The circuit still uses ordinary relays, the address you open is still whatever you pasted, and the market still sees an ordinary session.
Cost
Slower connections, more failed circuits, occasional bridges that have already been discovered and blocked, and a setup step that has to be repeated when they are.
Verdict
Only if Tor itself is being blocked. It is a censorship tool, not a privacy upgrade.

IHow to tell whether this is your problem

  1. 01Tor Browser sits at connecting and never finishes, or finishes and then every onion fails including ones you know work.
  2. 02The same laptop connects normally on a different network, for example tethered to a phone.
  3. 03You are on a national network, a corporate one, or a campus that filters aggressively.
  4. 04If instead a single Awazon address stalls while others open, this is not your record. That is N1.

IIWhich bridge type

Obfs4 makes the traffic look like nothing in particular, which defeats equipment that recognises Tor by its signature. Snowflake routes the first hop through short lived volunteer browsers, which makes it hard to block by address but leaves it slower and less stable. Both are offered inside Tor Browser without needing an external tool, and the built in request flow is the sensible starting point.

Bridges obtained from forums, chat groups or a search result are a different matter. A bridge is the first machine your traffic touches, and one handed to you by a stranger is a machine chosen by a stranger. Use the official channels the browser already points at.

IIIWhat a bridge does not do

It does not encrypt anything that was not already encrypted. It does not change which relays carry the rest of the circuit. It does not hide from the market that you are using Tor, since every onion visitor is. And it has no opinion at all about whether the fifty six character string you pasted is the real Awazon address, which remains the single most consequential variable on this site and is covered in record A2.

IVThe cost of running one you do not need

On an unfiltered line, a bridge is a slower path to the same place. More timeouts, more rebuilds, more of the stalling that people then misread as the market being down. If nothing is blocking you, the substitution spends stability and returns nothing.

CONDITION

Add a bridge when Tor will not connect. Do not add one because it sounds like an extra layer, because it is not a layer, it is a disguise for the first hop.
