M4Awazon Market // record M4

M4 // Funding in advance to funding at checkout

A timing question with two real answers. Which one is right depends on whether your risk is the market or the exchange rate, and only you know that.

Awazon Market // onion addresses

The three strings below open the same market. The same account, the same balance, the same open orders sit behind each one. Copy a string, paste it into Tor Browser, and read the last six characters in the address bar before you type a password.

NOTHING HERE IS RANKED. THE ORDER IS THE ORDER THEY WERE WRITTEN IN.

Baseline
Coin sent to the market in advance so that it is settled when you want to order.
Substitution
Coin sent at the moment of checkout, for the amount of that order.
What moves
How long your money sits in somebody else's custody, and how exposed you are to the price moving between the send and the order.
Does not move
The order itself, the vendor, escrow, or how long confirmations take.
Cost
Funding late means waiting for confirmations while a listing may sell out or a price may change. Funding early means the exposure described in record M3.
Verdict
Only if you can say which of the two risks is larger for you. Both answers are defensible and the wrong one is answering without asking.

IThe two clocks

Funding early starts a custody clock: your money is on the market, and every hour it sits there is an hour it can be affected by something you do not control. Funding late starts a market clock: between your send and your order, the price can move and the listing can change.

These are genuinely different risks and they are not comparable in the abstract. A large amount held for a week is a different proposition from a small one held for an hour.

IIA working rule

  1. 01Fund for the order you are placing, not for the orders you might place.
  2. 02Fund when you are ready to act, so the custody window is measured in hours rather than days.
  3. 03If confirmations are slow enough that listings move underneath you, that is an argument for a slightly larger buffer, not for a standing balance.
  4. 04Never fund because a countdown appeared next to a payment field. Countdowns are a design decision aimed at exactly this record.

IIIThe variant that is always wrong

Funding a large amount early because the rate looks good today, and calling it planning. That converts a currency decision into a custody decision without noticing, and the custody decision is the one with no reversal. If the rate is the reason, hold the coin in your own wallet, where the rate applies just as well and the custody is yours. That is record M2 doing double duty.

IVWhat neither answer changes

Once sent, it is sent. Both branches of this record end at the same place, which is why the money group is arranged around the seconds before the button rather than the recovery afterwards.

CONDITION

Fund late by default. Fund early only when you can name the specific reason, and never for more than the order in front of you.
