I5 // A phrase on the machine to a phrase off it
Twelve or twenty five words that are not a hint about the wallet. They are the wallet, and most people keep them in the one place worth attacking.
Awazon Market // onion addresses
The three strings below open the same market. The same account, the same balance, the same open orders sit behind each one. Copy a string, paste it into Tor Browser, and read the last six characters in the address bar before you type a password.

NOTHING HERE IS RANKED. THE ORDER IS THE ORDER THEY WERE WRITTEN IN.
IWhat the words are
A seed phrase is not a password for a wallet application. It is a compact form of every key the wallet will ever generate. Anybody who reads it can reconstruct the wallet elsewhere and empty it, without touching your machine again and without your knowledge until the balance is gone.
That is why the storage question is not a matter of taste. A phrase in a synchronised note is a phrase on a company's servers. A phrase in a photo is in a photo library that is probably synchronised as well and is scanned for text automatically.
IIWhat the clipboard sees
This site is built around copying strings, so the clipboard deserves a mention. On a normal desktop it is readable by whatever is running, and on some mobile systems by whatever is in the foreground. Pasting a seed phrase, even once, puts it somewhere with a wider audience than the file you took it from. Copying an onion address is fine; copying a seed phrase is not the same act.
IIIDoing it properly
- 01Write the words by hand, in order, on paper. Check them twice against the wallet before you rely on it.
- 02Store the paper somewhere that is not on or under the desk with the computer. A second location is better than a better hiding place.
- 03Metal is worth it for an amount you would be upset to lose, because paper does not survive water or fire.
- 04Delete the digital copies. All of them, including the photo you took while setting it up and the draft message you sent yourself.
IVThe failure this replaces
Commodity information stealers do not target individuals. They run on whatever machine they reach, search for wallet files, seed phrase patterns and screenshots, and send the results onward. The phrase in a text file on the desktop is the single most rewarding thing they find, and the substitution here removes it from the search entirely.
A seed phrase on the machine you browse with is a wallet with a copy of its own key sitting next to it.
